Why do some Palestinians
below themselves up?
The women casually asked me why the Palestinians below up themselves to
kill innocent people. Is it something in the Islamic teaching? she
wondered.
Reflecting on this insinuating question I started thinking myself, why
couldn't the Palestinians tell their own tragic human story to the world
in a less dramatic fashion? Islam teaches us in wars to never kill enemy
civilians, children, women, elders, animals or even trees.
Now everyone is asking the Palestinians to stop the violence and no one
attempts to understand why this is happening. In the age of TV images,
Internet and sound bites, we only hear about those few so called suicide
bombers killing Israeli civilians, as if those Palestinian fanatics are
doomed to blow themselves up because they can't help it - they are angry
Arab or Muslim fundamentalists.
The biggest problem that the Palestinians have in this age of story
telling is the fact that in the last five decades they couldn't control
whose story the world was hearing. People who were fixated on telling
their own personal story were drowned out by the people who they
represented e.g. Nasser, Saddam, Assed, PLO, Yasser, Hamas, Ben Eladin,
Ramzi and those so called suicidal bombers. The Palestinians may have the
best story to tell but the worst story tellers.
For decades, millions of Palestinian Diasporas have been held hostage and
living as refugees as a collective punishment for a few lunatics who
decided to blow up buildings, airplanes or shopping malls. They always are
asked to stop the violence, before they can be given their freedom, their
land, their houses, and their olive trees back.
The recent publishing of the Michelle report about the Middle East
conflict is jumping on the same bandwagon and is demanding that
Palestinians stop the violence before there can be any peace talks.
Is it worth anyone's time here to try to understand why some desperate
Palestinian youths below themselves up in Israelis shopping malls and bus
stations? Is it enough for us to just know that these desperate lunatics
are Arab or just Muslim extremists who should simply be left alone? Could
it be that they are evil by nature and for them there is only the quick
fix of demolishing their houses and bombing them into submission.
We go to great lengths to get into Senator Kerry's mind and selective
memory, desperately trying to understand the evil condition that forced
him to slaughter the civilians in Vietnam. No one bothers to understand
the devastation and emotional impact on the very same victims who had
survived the actual nightmare. We never stop trying to analyze Mr.
McVeigh's twisted mind, helplessly grasping for a rational explanation for
his horrifying act that killed 165 people and injured hundreds more.
Experts and academics spent countless hours trying to explain why Susan
Smith, a mother of two children, would strap her boys into a car and drive
them into a lake. Eventually we were told that an extra marital affair was
the reason for these horrific deaths. And Mr. Dahmer, we were led to
believe by psychologists, was a victim of an abusive childhood, which
drove him to his sadistic killing and cannibalization of his neighbor
victims.
Why do all those people commit heinous violence? asked once the Newsweek
special issues. Are they evil? Or we are a civilized nation that has lost
its soul?
Violence committed by some individuals will bring hundreds of experts to
the table to discuss the conditions and reasons, as if those individuals
are not cable of committing such a heinous act. However, those few Arab or
Muslim killers for some reason are violent with devilish genes and are
driven by the sword and not the soul.
The victims of the victims have never been able to get their story to the
international community.
While Israel commands the moral ear of the western world since the Jewish
persecution in Europe, the Palestinians experience discontent and
rejection. Their story was told by undemocratic tyrants, unselected Kings,
corrupt leaders and desperate individuals.
In the spirit of the celebration of the Jewish state's Independence Day, I
am reminded by the Palestinians "Nakbah" catastrophe. Millions of
Palestinians' reality 52 years ago was erased and changed forever by a
2000-year-old interpretation of prophecies and a divine real estate
promise that now gives people who had lived thousands of miles away the
right to claim its title. And those who had the real title were forced to
leave. Now they are asked to stop the violence before they are recognized
as people, civilized people.
There is no excuse for violence and killing civilians or innocent people
regardless of your cause or intention, but it is worth mention for the
Israelis and the world to try to understand the nature of Palestinians'
violence and their determination to have their own state.
