In Oakland recently, a group of black Moslem men dressed in suits and bow ties attacked and vandalized some liquor stores owned by Moslems for selling liquor. While the media frenzy is focusing on the religion and the motive of the attackers, nation of Islam spook person quickly denies any connection to the attackers. Thousands of attacks and arsenals are committed almost every week in this country. A young woman in Minneapolis recently was casually talking on her mobile phone to her boyfriend while robbing a TCF bank, as if she was shopping for money. But what is so special about the liquor store attack is not the religion of the attackers but the religion of the shop owners! Arab Moslem Americans seem to have finally made it to mainstream Americana. I always thought Moslem Americans would only make it to mainstream Americana either when the next Miss American would be wearing a hijjab (head scarf), or when they demand a prayer room at casinos, Now, even better, Moslem Americans are opening liquor stores in inner city America. But why was this so offensive to a few black converts who resorted to this strange vigilante vandalistic behavior.

The American people spend billions of dollars on consuming liquor every year, but an Arab Moslem American selling the forbidden spirit, maybe for some black converts, is a little to much to swallow; it is like an animal rights activist selling frogs to some French restaurants, or an evangelical American opening an Islamic book store targeting Moslem Americans. Black Moslem converts seem to hold the new beliefs dearly in their heart, a transformation to a utopian world of justice and noble world, where there is no alcohol, no sex, no pork or even fun. However, an Arab Moslem by birth may not share this ideal world. Arab Moslem Americans - as any other American immigrants here - need to survive, so they do what it takes to achieve that, even if that means selling liquor or even serving pork in restaurants to the non-Moslems. Divine beliefs and divine places become provincial to the natives after awhile; it loses its novelty and reverences. Millions of people travel thousands of miles every year and come here to just take a glance at the statue of liberty… when was the last time you thought about visiting the symbol of our freedom? Making a living for an immigrant in this country is a hard work; a native convert may be disappointed as after leaving behind his old religion, old friends and old beliefs… his journey to the new religion has been tarnished by such violation of selling liquor by another Moslem brother.
