Are Arabs necessary?
by Ahmed Tharwat
Humorless Arabs/Moslems went on a rampage in the streets to protest the
insulting of their prophet in the Danish newspaper cartoons. Many Americans
were awed and could not understand the cranky Moslems' outrageous reaction.
People I don't even know approach me in the street, at work and even in
supermarkets.
Could you please explain this strange Arab reaction??
I am not an expert on angry Arab behavior. However, I can tell you that
Arabs/ Moslems don't have a monopoly on stupidity and mob mentality. To
truly understand this outrageous human reaction, you need not go to an
anthropology expert - you need to look no further than the congress and
witness their panicked reaction to the latest deal allowing Arab
conglomerate Dubai Ports World to control operations at several major U.S.
seaports.
The controversy ignited a huge squabble in the congress, triggering a
political bonanza that now involves virtually every prominent Republican and
Democrat in Washington, along with a couple of governors near the affected
ports. Nothing brings American politicians together more than their shared
passion for hating the Arabs.? Opportunist congressional representatives are
running as fast as they can from the deal and from President Bush. “I will
fight harder than ever for this legislation, announced Rep. Peter King, R.
NY., addressing the new legislation he will introduce to suspend the port
deal.“We should really test the resolve of the president on this
one, declared Sen. Bob Menedez, D. N.J., urging his colleagues to reject the
port deal.
This reaction is spoiling the war on terrorism's cocktail party! ? The
president responded surprisingly by promising to use his veto pen for the
first time in his presidency, while subtly accusing critics of being
anti-Arab. I guess the president, after eavesdropping on Arabs for so long,
has heard enough to know that Arabs aren't inheritably bad people. The
Republicans are now abandoning their Moses in the political wilderness.
Their champion of the war on terrorism - the one who was going to deliver
them to the promised land - is accused of being an Arab lover who is soft on
homeland security. ? It is a known fact that regardless of who runs our
ports operation, the ports securities are still handled by our own coast
guards, and I can assure you that there is not a single Arab there.
Looking to the post 9/11 American reaction, I am inspired by Maureen Dowd's
new book, Are Men Necessary? to raise life's other persistent question, “Are
Arabs necessary?? They are blamed for everything that is wrong with the
world, those evil doers, baby killers and now religious shrine destroyers.
Arab Americans are treated and monitored like sex offenders, and are
virtually rounded up in an electronic internment.“Are Arabs necessary?? Let
us see, it is not just Arabs who have been providing us with an unlimited
supply of oil to fulfill addiction, filling our central banks and treasury
with billions of dollars.
It is not only Arab countries that are used to outsource our torture and
illegal detention. Moreover, if there is only one reason why we should open
our homeland to Dubai to outsource our seaport operations, remember that
Dubai is now the home of American pop superstar Michel Jackson. We are
already outsourcing our cultural pariah on Arab land - should this not count
for something? America , let my people go! ?
